Global Festival of Learning 2018

This year BU will be taking the Festival of Learning to India, China, Europe and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) between February and May 2018 - and you can apply to be a part of it.

What’s involved?

BU’s Global Festival of Learning (GFOL) is an exciting platform for international public engagement that celebrates learning, disseminates cutting edge research and delivers impact across borders. It provides a forum for researchers, educators, policy-makers, businesses, learners, and the wider community, to engage in a week-long programme that fosters a dynamic exchange on how research, education and practice can enrich the global society within which we live and work.

In recognition of our home-grown festival’s growing popularity and reputation, and following highly successful events in 2016 and 2017, we'll be taking the Festival of Learning global again this year. In 2018 the festivals will continue to be in the hub regions of India, China and ASEAN, with the addition of a Europe based festival.

Each of the BU festival delegations will be joined by a group of BU students who will directly support the preparation, delivery and evaluation of the events. You'll be involved during the lead up to the festival as well as being active participants during the week itself. You'll also have responsibilities after the event when back at BU (e.g. editing film and photography footage etc.). If successful, you'll be working closely with students and staff at BU and overseas and you'll gain a well-rounded impression of the local cultural environment. The work will develop your team working, adaptability, communication and problem solving skills as well your cross cultural skills.

You'll be able to apply for a maximum of three festivals and if successful, attend only one of them in 2017/18 academic year. There will also be an opportunity to apply for other opportunities in Europe and ASEAN and the student selection process for these will be announced in early 2018. You can apply for only one of the roles so please choose carefully which of the roles matches your knowledge, skills and experience. You'll be expected to actively contribute to the project outcomes dissemination after the events take place in the 2017/18 academic year. A detailed brief of the requirements will be supplied prior to the event, alongside a relevant training and pre-departure training sessions for all roles.

There are five student roles available: Social Media & Content Coordinator, Filming and Video Editing Assistant, Photography Assistant, Event Management Assistant and Student Researchers. Read the role descriptions (pdf 16.2kb).

What will the BU funding cover?

  • Return economy flights (including return coach Bournemouth / airport)
  • Visa
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Full tuition programme including visits (relevant to Destination programmes only)
  • Local transport

You are advised to bring your own spending money for any purchases you may wish to make while overseas.

Travel information

Visas
We will apply for a group visa application and organise this for you. You must have a valid passport with at least six months remaining with two clear pages. We cannot guarantee that your visa will be granted as this is subject to immigration laws. You will be expected to provide your passport for a considerable amount of time in order to process your visa application.

Immunisations
Please refer to the NHS guidelines regarding immunisations.

Students will need to book immunisations through their local GP at their own cost.

Insurance
BU will provide comprehensive travel insurance for the duration of the overseas trip.

Who is eligible to apply?

Please note the following eligibility criteria:

  1. BU student status: You can apply if you are a BU student undertaking a Foundation, Diploma, UG, PGT, MPhil, MRes programme, or PhD. These exclude courses in franchise, validation, shared delivery or off-campus delivery programmes. Furthermore, you must not already have received Global Horizons Funding in 2017/18.
     
  2. Not in receipt of funding for international activities in 2017-18 academic year: If you took part in any of the previous GFOLs or the Destination summer school programmes in previous years, you can still apply to one of the GFOLs, however, you must not be in receipt of funding for international activities in this 2017-18 academic year.   3. Completeness of the application set: Your application must be fully completed and your most up to date CV attached. Incomplete applications or applications without attached CV will not go through to the quality assessment stage.

When do I apply?

The call for applications is now open and you can apply for a maximum of three opportunities in your application. The deadline is 9am on 15 November 2017.

How do I apply?
Please complete your online application and email your CV together with any relevant examples of work or your portfolio to internationalgrants@bournemouth.ac.uk. The application is considered incomplete if one or more of the elements are missing.

If you are successful at the shortlisting stage, you will be invited for a short interview. The final outcome will be communicated to you within a week of the interview stage. 

Completing the application form

Funding for this programme is from BU. This involves a two-stage competitive selection process in which a panel first assess applications individually. This is followed by an interview stage if successful at the shortlisting phase.

Please note the panel’s decision is final and we cannot provide individual verbal feedback on applications.

Important: It is your responsibility to ensure all the necessary information is provided correctly. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will be marked as void and removed from the process. 

Supporting statement (max 300 words)

The supporting statement is an important part of your application. It should address the following points, providing specific examples where necessary. You will need:

  • to outline how your specific skills will contribute to the Global Festival of Learning programme (e.g. social media content creation, filming, poster design and presentation, writing blogs);
  • to demonstrate how the mobility programme will help you develop professionally, i.e. give you experience, skills relevant to your career goals;
  • to demonstrate how the programme will enhance your intercultural competence and global awareness (global awareness is your understanding of global contexts and factors affecting your academic, professional and personal development).

Deadline for submission

9am on 15 November 2017

When will I find out if I am successful?

Within one week of submitting your application you will receive an email confirming the outcome of your application status.

Application declined
If your application is declined you are able to apply again for a future programme (assuming that you still meet the eligibility criteria). Due to the high volume of applications received, we are unable to provide verbal feedback on your application.

Please ensure your email address is correct. All communication will be sent to your student email address, which you have provided in your application form, so please check this!
