Brightspace

Brightspace is your virtual learning environment (VLE) and includes all the information you need to support your studies, including unit information, study materials and study skills resources. It’s also where you’ll find information to set up your academic timetable.

Last year we successfully introduced Brightspace to almost half of BU students and we’re now bringing this modern learning platform to all students.

We’ve created a series of ‘How to Videos’ which you’ll be able to access when you first login with your usual BU login details.

Information for current students

If you used myBU last year, all of your learning resources and materials from this year will be available in Brightspace. You can still log in to myBU and access study materials, unit grades and feedback from your previous years of study. The FAQs below will help you find important areas of Brightspace.

Frequently asked questions

When can I access my units of study?

Units of study will become available from the Brightspace homepage seven days before the start of term, including lecture notes, reading lists and other helpful learning resources such as online journals and past exam papers.

How do I set up my academic timetable?

Your class list and timetable information will be available before the start of term. Once the release dates are available we'll post them as an announcement in Brightspace and our social media channels, including @BournemouthuniStudents on Facebook.

When your timetable is available you’ll need to complete a few quick steps to set it up:

1 .Check the seminar group lists for your seminar group by clicking your faculty area from the Brightspace homepage, then select 'seminar group lists'. You’ll need to know your level of study - these are classified as follows: Level 4 = Year 1, Level 5 = Year 2, Level 6 = Final year or Top-up degree year, Level 7 = Master's taught courses.

2. Once you know your seminar group and level of study you can set up your timetable from the Brightspace homepage by clicking on ‘Useful links’ and then ‘Timetables’. You can access your timetable from the same place whenever you need to check your lecture/seminar schedule.

Note: If you're taking option units but can't see the groups for those units when you first set up your timetable, try clicking on a different year and then back to your year of study. When you choose your core seminar group the option groups you need to select from should appear.

3. Once your timetable is set up you will then be able to view it via the University app ‘iBU’ . You may need to logout and login to the app to do this.

You will also notice a calendar within Brightspace, please note that this does not include your lecture/seminar schedule.

I’m a new student – where do I find my preparation activities?

Preparation activities will be available in a pre-arrivals area of Brightspace before you arrive and once you’ve registered online for your course.

Where can I find the unit guides for my course?

Select a unit from the Brightspace homepage, click on ‘Content’ in the navigation bar then ‘Unit information’

How do I access online journals?

Click on ‘Library & Learning Support’ in the navigation bar on the Brightspace homepage and then click ‘Library’.

How do I access lecture notes and materials?

Learning materials are provided for you by your unit tutors and are often made available as new topics are covered.

To access your learning materials, select a unit from the Brightspace homepage, then click on ‘Content’ in the navigation bar. Learning materials will be available via the ‘Table of Contents’.

How do I access my emails?

From the Brightspace homepage, click on ‘Useful links’ and then ‘Email’.

How do I submit an assignment?

The majority of assessed work at BU is submitted online via Turnitin, which is accessible through Brightspace. For written assignments you will receive constructive and timely feedback through the ‘Feedback Studio’ also provided by Turnitin.

To submit an assignment, select a unit from the Brightspace homepage then click on ‘Assignment Submission’ in the unit navigation bar; ensure that any file requirements explained in the instructions are met and upload your assignment.

Further support for assignment submission is available by clicking ‘Help’ in the navigation bar on the Brightspace homepage.

Note for returning students:

Any feedback provided for assignments submitted via myBU in previous years of study will remain on myBU and will remain available in myBU for the duration of your study.

Originality reports for draft assignments can be viewed by uploading your assignment file to the ‘Turnitin Draft Checker’ which can be found on the Brightspace homepage.

How do I access study support and skills resources?

Click on ‘Library & Learning Support’ in the navigation bar on the Brightspace homepage.

From here you can then select different areas such as Study Skills, IT Learning Centre and Languages@BU.

Where can I get more help and guidance?

Click on ‘Help’ from the navigation bar on the Brightspace homepage to access online guidance.
