Your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) includes all the information you need to support you during your studies, including unit information, study materials and study skills resources. It’s also where you find information to help set up your academic timetable.
Brightspace and myBU – finding your VLE
For the 2017/18 academic year we will be running two VLEs: myBU (our current VLE) and Brightspace (our new VLE). Almost half of BU students will use Brightspace this year, with the remainder using myBU, before Brightspace is rolled out to all students in 2018/19. Whichever VLE you’re using this year, you’ll be able to access all of the information you need for your studies.
Information for students starting in January & February 2018
Postgraduate and undergradaute students starting in Spring 2018 will be using Brightspace - read the frequently asked questions below, then log in to Brightspace to access your preparation activity and any course information your tutors may have uploaded.
If you are an incoming exchange student and need any assistance please contact the Global Engagement team.
Information for current students
If you're a current student now using Brightspace, you can still login to myBU and access study materials, unit grades and feedback from your previous years of study. The FAQs below will help you find important areas of your VLE, and you can still use the below look-up tool if you need to.
Frequently asked questions
Why are you changing the VLE?
Brightspace offers a modern-learning platform, centred around intuitive, responsive and accessible design, which will provide a personalised learning experience that’s accessible at any time and across a range of devices.
The decision to review BU’s VLE came from BU student and staff feedback, which identified that use of the right technology can enhance learning. This has informed a university-wide project called ‘Vision4Learning’. The same feedback has also led to a refresh of all our audio-visual equipment in our teaching spaces.
A total of 250 students and members of BU staff, representing ten university departments and services, participated in the selection of Brightspace as BU’s new VLE.
How will I know which VLE I am using?
We have created a look-up tool which will direct you to your VLE in three easy steps. All you need to do is select your faculty, course and year of study from the drop down lists. The look-up tool is at the top of this page and your VLE will be available after you have registered for your course online.
If you are an exchange student and will be studying at BU on an Erasmus+ scheme, the name of your course is included on your learning agreement. If you’re still unsure please email the Global Engagement Mobility Team.
Can I access and set up my academic timetable from my VLE?
Timetables will be available before the start of term - when the release dates are available we'll share them on our social media channels, including @BournemouthuniStudents on Facebook.
The process is the same whichever virtual learning enviornment (VLE) you'll be using this year.
You’ll find this information by clicking on your faculty tab/area from your VLE homepage, then by clicking on 'seminar groups'. Make sure you enter your seminar group and level of study correctly - your year group will be classified as follows:
Level 4: Year 1
Level 5: Year 2
Level 6: Final year or Top-up degree year
Level 7: Master's
If you're taking option units but can't see the groups for those units when you first set up your timetable, try clicking on a different year and then back to your year of study. When you choose your core seminar group the option groups you need to select from should appear.
