Gain valuable experience

A work placement for every student

We believe that you can learn just as much from a relevant work placement as you can from studying a course with us, which is why we encourage all of our students to go out into the real world and see how things are done.

That is why all undergraduate courses at Bournemouth University offer students the opportunity to undertake a work placement and within the Faculty of Science & Technology, we have excellent industry contacts. In fact, many businesses we work with come back to us time and again to request our placement students.

Varied placement opportunities

The placement opportunities open to you will depend on the course you are studying, and we will encourage you to find work with a relevant organisation. Placements range in length from just a few weeks to a full academic year and no matter which course you are studying, you can opt for a full placement (minimum 30 weeks) as part of your degree programme.

Among the organisations that students from our Archaeology, Anthropology, Forensic Science, and Life and Environmental Science courses have worked for are Wessex Archaeology, Wildlife Trusts, the National Trust, the Environment Agency and Fawley Research Laboratories, among many others.

If you are taking one of our computing or creative technology courses, you may be able to go on a placement to companies such as IBM, British Aerospace, Xerox, Walt Disney or Jaguar Cars, while our design and engineering students have previously worked for Dyson, Aston Martin, Matsushita Electric UK Ltd, Hewlett-Packard and Fraser-Nash to name just a few.

We also encourage you to seek work placements overseas, allowing you to not only gain a valuable insight into your chosen industry, but also to experience a different culture and way of life. This may be through a conventional work placement or, for archaeology, anthropology or forensics students, by joining a specific dig or research project abroad.

Placement officer

Within the Faculty of Science & Technology, we have a dedicated placements team, who will help you find relevant work experience using our contacts and who can assist with your application. We have a database of nearly 900 organisations who have hosted students in the past and this list is constantly growing.

We also advertise any vacancies on our internal placements and careers website MyCareerHub.

You'll find placements on offer all over the world, as well as in the UK, giving you exciting opportunities to get involved in varied projects, experience different roles within the workplace and build connections with international, as well as local, organisations, many of which are leaders in their fields.

Employability

Undertaking a work placement while you're studying makes you highly employable and provides you with a chance to network with professionals in your chosen specialism.

In some cases, the contacts you make while on your placement can lead to job offers on graduation.

Why do a placement?

Placements were a massive reason I chose to come to BU, and my placements at the National Trust and a school have been invaluable.

Why I love Archaeology at BU

I’m well into my 3rd year studying Archaeology and I am loving it. Field trips and placements have provided many excellent opportunities for me.
