You can access PCs, techno-booths, computer labs and our free WiFi at all BU locations. You'll also have access to two network folders: the H drive to store personal files and the P drive to access public student files.
You can access all these systems using your new student username and password, which will be sent when you are invited to register for your course.
And if you ever need any IT support, we offer 24 hour, seven day a week computer access and support so that we're always availble at a time that suits you.
Here are details of just some of the IT software and support available:
Free MS Office 365 ProPlus
It’s free for you to download and use Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus while you are studying. This includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other MS applications, with one terabyte of storage through OneDrive – so there’s no need to buy Office before you arrive.
You’ll be able to install Office on up to five personal devices, along with mobile applications for your phone.
Free WiFi in halls, on campus and on the bus
If you’re living in a BU halls of residence then you will have access to the internet via the BU wireless network, making it easier for you to access all of our IT facilities. You'll also find free WiFi in all campus buildings as well as on our UNIBUS service.
Check your emails
It’s really important that you check your BU email account regularly. This is where your tutor, programme support team and other university departments will send important updates and information. You can easily link your BU email account to your smart phone (once you have access to it after registering for your course online) and there are instructions on synching it your phone's email app in our iBU mobile app.
Printing your work
Your BU student ID card, which you will be given at your enrolment session, acts as your library card and also stores print credits. You can top up your print credit online or at machines around campus. Our printers allow you to print in colour or black and white, as well as scan and photocopy – you just need to swipe your card to retrieve your printing.
Finding a computer to use on campus
We have lots of computer facilities for you to use, including: social learning spaces with techno-booths (which you can book in advance), computer labs (some with specific software/hardware for your course), Open Access Centres which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the library. Use our iBU mobile app to check PC availability in the library. We also provide free wireless access across campus if you bring your own device.
Laptop loan scheme
You can borrow a MacBook Air for up to 4 hours, for free between 8am and 10pm every day, by simply scanning your BU student ID card. The laptops are in a series of lockers found on the ground floor of the Student Centre, and can be used anywhere on the Talbot Campus. You'll need to sign up to the scheme before you can borrow a laptop, and then you just need to login with your usual BU login details. If you have any queries regarding this, please contact the IT Service Desk on 01202 965515 or visit our IT Help Zone in PG16.
Open Access Centres (OAC)
You'll find 24/7 access to computer facilities and printers on both campuses all year round, including out of term time and during public holidays. There is one in Studland House on the Lansdowne Campus and another in PG22, Poole House on the Talbot Campus. You'll need your student ID card to get access - make sure it's up-to-date by visiting Studland House or Poole House reception between 9am-5pm during term-time.
Accessing BU systems off campus
You can access your VLE, the library online catalogue and more online. You can also view lots of services using our iBU mobile app.
