Alex Manu, LLB (Hons) Law, placement at Law Debenture Trust Corporation

The placement year is amazing – not just because of the experience you gain, but because once you finish your degree you might have a job waiting for you.

I worked in the commercial trust department, which wasn’t legal-based. It was something a bit different and that was what attracted me to the placement. I’d already done work experience at law firms and had spent the previous two years studying my law degree, so I wanted to see what the other side was like.

I had a great experience and got to live in London as well – which, for a country boy from Somerset, was a bit of a shock to start with. That’s just another example of the opportunities a placement can provide: living in London and working for one of the best companies in the country is amazing.

Law Debenture had amazing links. Even though I wasn’t working in law, I was interacting with people from that profession. Every day I’d speak to law firms – including Magic Circle firms – so it was a great way to network. I’m still in touch with partners from a number of big law firms.

What I’ve come away with was invaluable in terms of who I know. I can’t stress the value of it enough.

I’ve spoken to employers and know for a fact they will take anyone who’s got a 2:1 and a placement year over someone with a first, purely because they have that industry experience.
