Elena Pagliei, BA (Hons) Global Media Practice
Elena Pagliei joined The Mill, a VFX and post-production company in London, a week after leaving BU. Initially a production intern, she was quickly promoted to production assistant and then producer.
I was very impressed when I saw how many professionals in the film industry had graduated from BU – it was this, along with the university’s reputation and its links with the VFX industry, that attracted me to apply.
We had very important professionals coming to BU as guest speakers, as well as careers fairs where we could meet recruiters. This is actually how I got my job, before I’d even completed my degree course.
The amazing thing about the Faculty of Media & Communication is that pretty much everybody needs a crew or a team to complete their assignments and all the students are very enthusiastic about working on as many projects as possible.
Not only is this fun and allows you to make new friends, it’s what makes you stand out once you get into industry.
When I graduated, I felt much more competent than I’d expected to in this environment and this allowed me to prove myself quickly in the workplace.
My role now is to ensure that VFX and animation projects are delivered on budget and schedule. This entails managing the relationship with the clients, understanding what they want and agreeing budgets and timing plans. Internally, I make sure we have the right resources on the jobs and I coordinate and support the artists throughout the production process.
I’m definitely making use of the skills I learned while studying. The academic knowledge and the experience I gained have been extremely important to my career progression.
