Get ready for your move

How to book accommodation

Moving at any stage of your life can be stressful, but it can be especially daunting if it’s the first time you’ve lived away from your family. We want to make that transition as easy as possible for you every step of the way, from applying for your accommodation to arriving at the start of the semester.

Collecting your keys and moving in

Once your accommodation has been confirmed, and we’ve received your deposit and booking fee, you will be sent an email, just before arrival, inviting you to carry out an online induction. In this process, you will be able to book a time slot for your arrival.

If you have any questions about moving in, please get in touch with our Residential Services team.

When you arrive to collect your keys, you need to bring the following:

  • Some form of identification (driver’s licence, passport etc).

You will only be given your keys if all the necessary paperwork has been received, your deposit has been paid and your induction has been completed.

What to bring

Our first piece of advice is not to overpack. Remember that the majority of the rooms in our halls of residence are singles and therefore have limited storage space. Bring the essentials with you initially and see how much space you have left. If you are travelling from overseas, remember you can buy everything you need when you get here. Just bring essentials such as a winter coat, warm clothes and a few items that will help you feel at home, such as photos to put on your wall.

If you are travelling within the UK and have space to pack more, you may choose to still bring the following:

  • Cutlery
  • Crockery
  • Pots and pans (some flats have induction hobs, we suggest that you bring suitable pans)
  • Cooking utensils (don’t forget the potato peeler!)
  • Tea towels
  • Bedding
  • Pillows
  • Bed linen
  • Towels.

Additional information for international students

If you are moving to the UK from another country, we want you to settle in quickly and get your time at BU off to the best possible start. We offer an airport meet and greet service as part of our International Students’ Orientation Programme and host several events at the start of the semester to help you make friends and find your way around our campuses and Bournemouth town.
