How to book accommodation for September 2017

The information below is for September 2016 entry. We will update this page with information for the September 2017 intake in due course.

We will email you with details of the next steps (please make sure ‘bournemouth.ac.uk' is on your safe senders list so our email doesn’t end up in your junk!) once the Accommodation Portal opens.

If you're starting a course with us in January 2017, please visit our Accommodation for January 2017 starts web page.

There are two main stages to the BU accommodation booking process:

Stage 1 - registering your interest in BU accommodation

Stage 1 sees you register your interest in BU accommodation. All students applying to commence their studies in September 2016, who have a Firm status, will be emailed within two weeks of this with details about how to complete Stage 1. Whichever day you receive your email, you will be able to complete Stage 1 of the accommodation booking process.

Stage 2 - booking your accommodation

Stage 2 asks you to tell your future housemates a bit more about yourself, choose your accommodation and make a payment to secure your room.

Throughout June, July and August, we have four accommodation release periods for Stage 2 undergraduate applicants and three for postgraduate applicants. When you have met all the conditions of your offer (Unconditional Firm U/F status), and Stage 2 is open, we will invite you to book your accommodation.

A percentage of each accommodation is available to book in each of these releases on a first come, first served basis. You will have an equal chance of booking accommodation whether you are invited to book in the June, July or August release period.

BU accommodation guarantee

We guarantee accommodation for all new eligible undergraduate students who have selected BU as their Firm choice and submitted their UCAS application by the 15 January deadline (UK/EU students) or 30 June deadline (non-EU students).

We also guarantee accommodation for any eligible postgraduate student who has completed their booking for accommodation by 18 August 2016.

What should I do if I don't have online access when I need to complete either Stage 1 or Stage 2?

There is no way to book accommodation offline. If you don't have online access, you need to give your login details to someone you trust to book your accommodation on your behalf.

Please be aware that the person you give your login details to will have access to all of your personal information, and that your login details will remain the same throughout your studies at BU, potentially also giving that person access to your personal information in the future. Please read our full disclaimer (pdf 21kb) before passing your login details to anyone to complete the accommodation booking process on your behalf.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

Even if you miss one of the deadlines for applications mentioned above, there is still a good chance that there will be accommodation available. Please contact us to discuss your options at this stage. We can also help you in your search for somewhere to live if there are no rooms remaining within BU allocated accommodation.

Our accommodation options day, which is held every year shortly before the start of the first semester, is an opportunity for you to meet other new students looking for somewhere to live in their first year. Details of this event will be available from the middle of August and you will be told about the event if you still need accommodation at that time. In addition, we operate the BU Letting Service, which can help you find suitable private rented accommodation close to our campuses.

Finally, there is a selection of other private student accommodation providers in Bournemouth, both hotels and other halls of residence. You may be able to find a room in one of these establishments by booking directly with them.

Information for Health & Social Sciences students

If you will be studying Midwifery, Operating Department Practice or a Nursing course, you are advised to find accommodation close to your placement locality, which may not be in Bournemouth. During your placements, you will experience the full 24-hour shift pattern and will work long days, making it sensible to be based close to the hospital, rather than the university campus. Our NHS accommodation pages have comprehensive information about the rooms available in different locations and how to apply for them.

Living with a host family

If you would prefer, you can make arrangements to stay with a local family - an option that is open to international students. If this interests you, you should contact the Residential Services team directly. We will then send you the details of several host families and you can make arrangements to live with them.

Please note that this accommodation is not inspected by the university. Breakfast and evening meals are often included, but this is something you should discuss with your host family before you arrive.

When does the online accommodation system open for registration?

In 2016, our online accommodation system will open for registration on 11 April. We will email you details about how to log in and book your accommodation closer to the time.

Is it possible to book accommodation if BU is an insurance choice?

No, you will only be able to book accommodation once you have met the conditions of our offer and it is displaying as Unconditional Firm (UF) in UCAS Track if BU is listed as your insurance choice.

Is there a way to choose your own room?

Yes. When you sign into the online accommodation system you will have to choose your own room. In the second stage of the process, you will be asked to set up a profile of yourself that can be displayed to other prospective students.

This means you can look at who else is living in a particular flat and try to find flatmates who you think you will get on with.

What if you have specific needs for your accommodation?

If you have specific needs when it comes to your accommodation, whether due to a disability or wanting to live with your family, you will have the chance to tell us about it in the first stage of the accommodation application process. We will then contact you to discuss the best options to meet your needs.

Can you ensure two people are in the same flat?

There is the possibility that you and your friend can live in the same flat. When you sign into the online accommodation system, you and your friend will need to try to find a flat or house that has two available rooms and book them at roughly the same time.

Is there a different process for booking Unilet?

Fundamentally, no, the process is the same and you will still need to book your room through the online accommodation system. Remember that the price of rooms in Unilet properties varies based on a number of factors. When stage two opens, you will be able to see the prices for the rooms in each property and choose one that suits your needs and budget.

What information do you need to log into the online accommodation system?

You will be emailed log-in details for the online accommodation system. If you have accepted your offer and put BU as your firm choice (Conditional Firm or Unconditional Firm) before the portal opens, your login details will be emailed to you from 11 April 2016.

If you accept your offer after 11 April, your login details will be emailed to you within two weeks.

Is it possible to arrange to move in early?

No, we're sorry but you are not able to move in before the moving date you are given.

Do you provide accommodation for clearing applicants?

We can't guarantee accommodation for anyone who applies to BU through clearing. However, we will do our best to help you find somewhere to live. We run an accommodation options day shortly before the start of term where you can meet other students looking for accommodation and find a suitable property. You can also take a look at our pages about alternative accommodation find out more about what accommodation is available if you are unable to attend the accommodation options day.

What accommodation can you book if you're studying at a partner college?

As you will be studying at a partner college the best option for you will be to seek housing through your college, they will be able to provide you with suitable options available nearby and put you in touch with the right people.

If you are studying at Bournemouth and Poole College please click here for accommodation details.

If you are studying at Wiltshire College Salisbury please click here for accommodation details.

Unfortunately you are not eligible to live in Bournemouth University accommodation as you are studying with one of our partners but, as said above, our accommodation wouldn’t be the best option for you.

If you live within the BH postcode, can you book accommodation?

As you are within the BH postcode area you won't be eligible to book BU-allocated accommodation until after the start of term, when there may be vacancies which arise due to late cancellations, but you can still register your interest by completing Stage 1. We’ll be in touch with you once you meet the requirements to proceed to this stage, usually within two weeks of your offer going Firm.

If you're studying part time, can you still book accommodation?

Unfortunately to be eligible for BU accommodation students need to be studying full time at either our Lansdowne or Talbot Campuses.

What if you're not available to book your accommodation when you're given access to the accommodation portal?

If you are not available during your time slot then you will need to give your login details to someone you trust to book your accommodation on your behalf.
