How much is a BU Studentship worth?

A fully-funded Studentship includes a maintenance grant of £14,000 per year to contribute towards living expenses during the course of your research, as well as a fee waiver for 36 months. Associated costs - such as for fieldwork and conference attendance - will also be met under the Studentship.

Who is eligible to apply for a BU Studentship?

Any doctoral candidate is free to apply for a BU Studentship. The key criteria are demonstrating your motivation to complete your PhD within three years and showing that you have outstanding qualities.

As a minimum, you must meet the university’s minimum doctoral entry criteria - an Honours degree at Upper Second Class (2.1) and/or an appropriate Master’s degree. If English is not your first language, you will also need a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent). However, in many cases candidates will be expected to have a First Class (Hons) degree and/or a distinction at Master’s level.

What else will you look for?

Each Studentship has its own criteria that candidates need to fulfil, in terms of knowledge and/or expertise. In addition, we will look closely at your qualities, skills and background to determine what you could bring to a specific research project.
