Archives & special collections

The Library's archives & special collections are located in the mobile shelving on the ground floor of The Sir Michael Cobham Library, and in the Library Store (off-site).

It provides access to collections which support the research of Bournemouth University's Academic Faculties and secures where possible, through the quality or uniqueness of its collections, distinction within the higher education community.

For resources kept in secure off-site storage, a request form or sometimes an appointment will be necessary.

Student use

If you wish to use the archives and special collections stored in the mobile shelving at The Sir Michael Cobham Library, please apply using the Archives & Special Collections Permission Form. Forms are also available from the Help Zone. Please arrange to have the form countersigned by your tutor. There is no need to complete a form each time you need access, as the agreement is valid for one academic year.

You will be issued with an access key to operate the mobile shelving. This will be issued for one working day. Please return the key to staff at the Help Zone before the end of the working day.

For single items

If you only require one item from the archives and special collections, you may do so without submitting the countersigned form.  Instead, please ask for a "Store request form" at the Help Zone. A member of library staff will fetch the item for you, which you can use anywhere in the Library for that working day until closing time. These items cannot be removed from the building and should be returned in person to the Help Zone or the Library Attendants before the Library closes.

Staff and Researchers

Please ask for an access key at the Help Zone (The Sir Michael Cobham Library). You will need your Staff ID Card so that we can issue the key to you for the day.

For the ITA/IBA Cable Authority Archive 1953-1990, held off site, special arrangements are in place.
