The Sophie Drozdzik Memorial Scholarship

The Sophie Drozdzik Memorial Scholarship was established in honour of Sophie Drozdzik, who was due to join Bournemouth University in 2015 to study BA (Hons) Television Production.

Sophie Drozdzik – hardworking, dedicated and full of fun!

Sophie developed juvenile myoclonic epilepsy just before her 17th Birthday, whilst studying at college. She passed away whilst suffering from an epileptic seizure during the summer of 2015. She had excelled in her qualifications at Warwickshire College and was due to receive an Academic Excellence Scholarship from BU. In recognition of her academic endeavour, her dedication to learn and her outgoing character, her family, college and BU have developed this scholarship in her memory.

This is available to students who studied a creative subject at the Warwickshire College Group* and who show academic achievement and evidence a commitment to helping others – be that at home, in the community or at college, to provide a tribute and legacy to Sophie.

BU Music Scholarships

Key information

Entry For courses starting in September 2017 or January 2018
Eligibility Any UK, EU or international applicant applying for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course at BU
Value £1,150 (major award) or £450 (minor award)
Number available 15
Need to fill in an application Yes - complete the online form
Application deadline

31 August if your course starts in September and 30 November if your course starts in January. Late applications may be considered if there are funds remaining.

If you’re passionate about music and want to continue to develop your talents while you’re studying for your degree, our BU Music scholarships are here to support you. Some of the money you’re awarded will go towards regular music lessons for your main instrument or voice with one of the university’s tutors, but you can use the remainder to see your favourite artists in concert, buy new music for your collection or even to pick up a new outfit to wear on stage - whatever fuels your musical passion.

There are two types of music scholarships available - major award and minor award. To apply for one of these awards, you must be able to demonstrate that you are a talented musician or vocalist and that you have been involved in ensemble activity.

As part of your application, you will need to source two references. Referees can include your Director of Music, music teacher, instrumental/vocal coach, ensemble conductor etc, or any other person qualified to write about your musical abilities. They need to complete and submit the online reference form.

Scholarships will be awarded for the first year of study and may be continued for subsequent years of study providing you continue to meet the criteria.

Major award

For the major award you’ll need to have reached Grade 8 of the Associated Board, Trinity or LCM, or equivalent, in your main instrument or voice. In addition, you need to show you have an academic grounding in music, and have passed A-level (C or above) in the subject or have obtained Grade 8 theory.

In your application, you need to demonstrate how you wish to develop musically, as well as academically. If you are shortlisted, you’ll be invited for an audition and will find out whether you’ve won a scholarship within two weeks.

Your award will not be formally approved until you hold an unconditional firm offer (UF).

Minor awards

The minor awards are available if you narrowly miss out on the prerequisites for a major award - you’ll need to achieve Grade 8 in your first year and will then be eligible for a major award in your second year.

You’ll also be expected to contribute to musical life at the university by performing in concerts and participating in at least one university ensemble.

The BU Sport Scholarship is available to high level sporting athletes coming to study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at BU. The scholarship is designed to provide you with the funding you need to develop your sporting abilities and take them to the next level.

You can apply for up to £5,000 of funding and put this money towards coaching, equipment, competition entry fees, travel expenses or/or support services.

You must demonstrate excellence in your chosen sport, and be part of a Regional, National and/or International squad and compete at that level. Athletes receiving a scholarship will ideally represent BU in the BUCS programme (League and Individual), as well as themselves and/or their club at regional, national or international level. Individual athletes will also need to be competitive with top performers within the BUCS programme.

If you are awarded a scholarship, you will need to meet with the Sports Performance Manager to assess how the funds will help you throughout the year, commit to attending 75% of training sessions, represent BU in sporting competitions where possible to raise the profile of SportBU’s activities and to be featured in marketing materials.

As part of your application for a BU Sport Scholarship, you will have to attend our trial process and be assessed by our coach.

You must ensure your application is supported by a reference from a High Performance Coach or National Governing Body coach/ If you are applying for a sport that sits outside our performance BUCS programme, you will need to ensure that two references are sent alongside your application
