Invisible Presence: Women, STEMM, and News and Popular Culture
BU's next Cafe Scientifique will take place on Tuesday 4 September 2018, where BU's Dr Shelley Thompson and Alexandra Alberda will look at STEMM subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine).
What does expertise in STEMM subjects look like? Who are our experts in these fields? When we look at representation of expertise in narratives about STEMM in popular culture and news, women are virtually absent. This session explores the power of media representation and specifically the representation of STEMM in news and popular culture and asks us collectively to consider what role media can and should play in addressing the under representation of women in STEMM.
Join us on Tuesday 4 September from 7.30pm until 9.00pm (doors will open from 7.00pm) at Café Boscanova, 650 Christchurch Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth, BH1 4BP.
