Changing Places facilities are located around the country and are designed for people who need additional space, equipment, time and for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets and changing facilities.

Changing Places toilets are different to standard accessible toilets – or ‘disabled toilets’ – as they have extra features and more space to meet the needs of people who use them. Anyone in the local area can search for one of these facilities online and use the amenities and BU is proud to feature such facilities on the ground floor of The Fusion Building on Talbot Campus.

What’s available within the facility?

BU’s Changing Places toilet includes the following:

  • A height adjustable changing bench and washbasin
  • A hoist system to lift people between wheelchairs and the toilet
  • Enough space to ensure the bench and toilet can be approached from either side
  • A fully mobile privacy screen and fully waterproof stool
  • A hand drier and soap dispenser.

For Health and Safety reasons we do not provide slings. Users are asked to bring their own, which should be compatible with the loop system.

By providing enough space, privacy and appropriate equipment, BU is supporting carers to look after people with disabilities in dignified and hygienic conditions without endangering their own health.

Putting careful thought into the design of this toilet facility can open up a world of possibilities for people with severe disabilities – ensuring everybody can get out and about to enjoy the local area.
