In recognition of our efforts to promote race equality at BU, we were granted a Race Equality Charter (REC) bronze award in August 2023.

The Race Equality Charter helps universities to identify and address institutional and cultural barriers facing their Black, Asian and minority ethnic students and staff. It provides a framework for this process of reflection and facilitates the development of initiatives and solutions for tackling issues such as gaps around degree attainment and student employability, as well as staff recruitment and progression.

While we are proud to hold this award, Professor John Vinney, BU’s Vice-Chancellor, has emphasised that we need to continue with our efforts to support race equality: “We remain committed to progressing with our work in this area and an environment where all staff and students can flourish. We recognise that there is still much to do to live our value of inclusivity and deliver the implications for our BU community. We have defined our organisational purpose as to inspire learning, advance knowledge and enrich society. Delivering on the promise of inclusivity for all is one of the ways in which we will enrich society.”

You can find more information about the Race Equality Charter on the Advance HE website

We’re committed to progressing with our extensive action plans, which formed part of the REC submission. These will continue to represent all aspects of BU life, such as student recruitment, curriculum review, graduate outcomes and staff development.
