Travelling to watch, or take part in sport has become an increasingly important social, cultural, political and economic phenomena over recent years. As a result, the sport, tourism and events industries, and government and policy makers at international, national, and local levels are taking significant interest in the subject of sport tourism, and how it may be best managed to maximise its full potential.
Sport tourism can be defined in many ways, all of which involve a combination of travel and sporting activity This conceptualizes sport tourism as three distinct areas – travel to take part; travel to watch; and travel to venerate, worship or celebrate sport. Irrespective of the nature of sports, whether mega events such as the Olympic Games, FIFA Football World Cup, Formula 1 and other professional sports or smaller-scale events such as adventure sports, trekking or community-based sports, this conference theme aims to explore some of the issues associated with the development, management and legacies of sport tourism that are becoming increasingly important for host destinations.
