Entrepreneurship

Track chairs: Dr. Diane Wright, Manchester Metropolitan University and Dr. Evangelia (Lia) Marinakou, Bournemouth University

The hospitality and tourism industries have been driving economic development and transformation in developing and developed countries. The visitors’ economy is a turbulent environment in which hospitality and tourism organisations operate creating a challenge for constant change. Hospitality and tourism organisations face a number of challenges and changes in the industry such as competitive pressures, shifting consumer buying behaviours, technological advances, consolidation, and new distribution channels. Entrepreneurship and innovation are found to be ways to deal with these challenges.

The aim of this session is to consider the dynamics of entrepreneurship and management in the context of globalisation. Many tourism and hospitality businesses are small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that require a great deal of entrepreneurship. These businesses are characterised by low capital and lack of specific qualifications requirements needed to start a business, their demand is usually very localised, their nature allows an owner-manager to respond quickly to customer needs and expectations, and finally these businesses are usually owned and managed by families. Papers are invited on Entrepreneurship and Innovation with focus on hospitality, tourism and food services industries, including the following topics:

  • Different types of entrepreneurship
  • SMEs in Hospitality, Tourism, Food Services
  • Growth of entrepreneurship and the challenges entrepreneurs face
  • Gender and entrepreneurship
  • Entrepreneurship and implications for education
  • Entrepreneurship policy and tourism
