Research Themes

In Economics:

Agricultural, Food, and Health Economics

Research Theme led by Professor Tim Lloyd

Currently, work focuses on the concepts and empirical analysis of issues relevant to the UK food chain, price transmission, food inflation, and links between food and health. These projects attracted funding from an EU Framework 7 programme, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the National Institute for Health Research. Further projects on food scares and risk using behavioural economics are being undertaken. With Bournemouth Poole NHS Trust and Dorset health, BU is developing a diagnostic tool for peripheral neuropathy. Dr Howard-Jones provide related economic analyses on cost-effectiveness and societal benefits.

Trade and Economic Integration

Researchers within this theme are Professor Sangeeta Khorana, Professor Jens Holscher, Professor Allan Webster, Dr Peter Howard-Jones, Dr Mehdi Chowdhury and Dr Lei Xu.

Trade and economic integration can be an important source of productivity gains and structural transformation. Within this field Prof Khorana, Prof Holscher, Prof Allan Webster, Dr Howard-Jones, Dr Mehdi Chowdhury, Dr Lei Xu among others focus on the impact of trade agreements, barriers to trade, nontariff barriers, trends towards deglobalisation resulting from geopolitical shocks, and institutional development utilising empirical tools including econometric analysis. This will include the economic transition from formerly socialist systems to market economies and the eastern enlargement of the European Union. The embedded Trade and Development research Centre examines cross-cutting developments in trade and development within the post-Brexit UK, the European Union, emerging markets, and the transition economies of Eastern Europe & Central Asia.

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME's) for regional development

Research Theme led by Professor Davide Parrilli

The role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for regional development is studied through a focus on the critical approaches to technological innovation and environmental innovation by firms, whether based on the intensive use of science and technology (STI) or on the use of learning-by-doing, by-using and by-interacting practices in the supply chain (DUI). Professor Davide Parrilli studies innovation in the UK and the wider European context as well as in overseas countries (e.g. Africa, China). The team has published numerous international projects and publications in 4* and 3* international journals such as Research Policy, Technovation, Small Business Economics, and Technological Forecasting, among others.

Conflict resolution

Research Theme led by Dr Anna Hillingdon

Conflict resolution underpins the focus of this theme and the political decisions which affect economies given the presence of these conflicts. For example, developing mathematical models which determine the economic outcomes of the imposition of sanctions. The models are based on a game-theoretic approach such as games on networks. Dr Anna Hillingdon studies this area in-depth and with the support of international organizations.

Tourism Economics

Research Theme led by Professor Adam Blake

Tourism economics is a specialist field and the research team led by Professor Adam Blake takes a global view of this particular environment with a focus on analysing the economic impact of visitors in a range of worldwide destinations. Each destination has particular and unique economic characteristics, and the study of how these characteristics affect economic outcomes enables a better understanding of how to improve those outcomes. Tourism economics includes an econometric analysis of consumer demand and an economic impact analysis of the effects of tourism spending on the national economy.
